What is the dural?
The dura mater often gets referred to as merely the dura. It is one of the layers of connective tissue that make up the meninges of the brain (pia, arachnoid, and dura, from inside to outside). It is the outermost layer of the three meninges that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
Who discovered meninges?
History of the discovery and rediscovery of meningeal lymphatic vessels. The existence of lymphatic vessels in the brain meninges was first mentioned towards the end of the 18th century by Paolo Mascagni, an Italian physician known for his unparalleled anatomical knowledge (Bucchieri et al., 2015).
Where did dura mater originate?
neural crest
The dura surrounds the brain and the spinal cord. It envelops the arachnoid mater, which is responsible for keeping in the cerebrospinal fluid. It is derived primarily from the neural crest cell population, with postnatal contributions of the paraxial mesoderm.
What is a dural reflection?
Dural reflections refer to places where two face-to-face meningeal layers descend into the cranial cavity to form the septa that compartmentalize the brain. The two main dural reflections are the falx cerebri and the tentorium cerebelli.
Do dural tears heal?
Most surgeons agree, however, that a dural tear is something that requires an immediate treatment. Dural tears of the subarachnoid space simply do not seem to heal successfully on their own.
What is the pia mater?
The term “pia mater” means “tender matter.” It is composed of delicate connective tissue and has many tiny blood vessels. The pia mater is the only layer that clings tightly to the brain and follows all of its convolutions. Cerebral arteries and veins travel in the subarachnoid space, completely enveloped by pia mater.
Does pia mater contain CSF?
Function. In conjunction with the other meningeal membranes, pia mater functions to cover and protect the central nervous system (CNS), to protect the blood vessels and enclose the venous sinuses near the CNS, to contain the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and to form partitions with the skull.
Where Is Your Dural?
Gross Anatomy The spinal dura mater is a fibrous, non-adherent, tough layer surrounding the spinal cord. It is separated from the wall of the vertebral canal by the epidural space. This space contains loose areolar tissue and a network of internal vertebral venous plexuses.
Is the subarachnoid space real or potential?

Where is the subarachnoid space?
Anatomically, the subarachnoid space exists between the arachnoid mater externally and pia mater internally. A network of fine delicate connective tissue called trabeculae connects these two layers and gives this space its characteristic spider web appearance.
Is a dural tear painful?
The spine is one of the most delicate parts of the body. One tiny mistake, and the patient can have severe, worsening pain that requires additional surgery or immediate treatment.
