How can you tell if someone is sleeping or unconscious?
A person who is unconscious may seem like they are sleeping but may not respond to things like loud noises, being touched, or being shaken. Fainting is a type of unconsciousness that happens suddenly and may only last a few seconds. Other types can last much longer. A person’s vital signs may change.
What happens when a person is asleep?
Many biological processes happen during sleep: The brain stores new information and gets rid of toxic waste. Nerve cells communicate and reorganize, which supports healthy brain function. The body repairs cells, restores energy, and releases molecules like hormones and proteins.

Therefore, we may not “encode” new memories very well during these moments before sleep because we are simply not paying enough attention. The brain does not like it when the attention process works too hard before falling sleep.

This body movement is what doctors and scientists call a hypnic (or hypnagogic) or myoclonic jerk. It’s also known as a “sleep start,” and it can literally startle you out of falling asleep. This type of feeling is normal, and it can happen before people enter the deeper stages of sleep.
Can you sleepwalk with your eyes closed?
You normally associate people with open eyes as being awake but sleepwalkers also have their eyes open. However, those who are experiencing the RBD type of sleepwalking will almost always have their eyes closed, which marks them out.
How long until you pass out from not sleeping?
After going without sleep for 48 hours, a person’s cognitive performance will worsen, and they will become very fatigued. At this point, the brain will start entering brief periods of complete unconsciousness, also known as microsleep. Microsleep occurs involuntarily and can last for several seconds.
