What is Megavirus?
Scientists tell the journal PNAS that Megavirus probably infects amoebas, single-celled organisms that are floating free in the sea. The particle measures about 0.7 micrometres (thousandths of a millimetre) in diameter.
What causes the Megavirus?
These observations suggest that Megavirus and Mimivirus arose from a common cellular ancestor – one that could carry out protein synthesis – and lost the genes that were no longer needed. The alternative scenario, that these giant viruses started out small and acquired additional genes, seems unlikely.
Is Megavirus a DNA or RNA?
Megavirus Overall Genome Structure and Gene Content. The genome of Megavirus is a linear double-stranded DNA molecule with a size of 1,259,197 bp (74.76% A+T), making it the largest described viral genome.
Where is mimivirus found?
Mimivirus was serendipitously discovered within A. polyphaga, a free-living ubiquitous amoeba, prevalent in aquatic environments. Many of the mimivirus core genes exhibit a phylogenetic affinity with members of the family Phycodnaviridae (algal and phytoplankton viruses).
What does the Mimivirus do?
Mimivirus may be a causative agent of some forms of pneumonia; this is based mainly on indirect evidence in the form of antibodies to the virus discovered in pneumonia patients.
Can humans get Megavirus?
Two other megaviruses, Shan and LBA111, which also belong to the C line/group of the family Mimiviridae, genus Mimivirus (Table 1), have been isolated, as previously mentioned, from amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba spp., but they are hosts to humans (Table 1).
What is the largest virus known?
Mimivirus is the largest and most complex virus known.
What type of organism is Norwalk virus?
Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause gastroenteritis [gas-trō-en-ter-ī-tis] in people. Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestines, causing an acute onset of severe vomiting and diarrhea.
What’s the Norwalk virus?
Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Anyone can get infected and sick with norovirus. You can get norovirus from: Having direct contact with an infected person. Consuming contaminated food or water.
What is the size of mimivirus?
Mimivirus, a giant DNA virus (i.e. “girus”) infecting species of the genus Acanthamoeba, was first identified in 2003. With a particle size of 0.7microm in diameter, and a genome size of 1.2Mb encoding more than 900 proteins, it is the most complex virus described to date.
