What can telescopes tell us about space?

What can telescopes tell us about space?

Telescopes have also helped us understand the light that radiates from the sun and other stars. Modern telescopes like NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, provide evidence of billions of galaxies, each containing billions of stars like our sun.

Why is it important for space scientists to continue observing the sun?

The sun is a normal star. It is much closer to us than any other star, and by studying the sun, we can therefore learn more about other stars. The better we understand other stars, the more we know about the Milky Way. From there we know more about other galaxies and in the end we learn more about the universe.

Why is the sun important in space?

It holds the solar system together; provides life-giving light, heat, and energy to Earth; and generates space weather.

What are ultraviolet telescopes used for?

ultraviolet telescope, telescope used to examine the ultraviolet portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, between the portion seen as visible light and the portion occupied by X-rays.

How can we see so far into space?

Earth’s atmosphere changes and blocks some of the light that comes from space. Hubble flies around, or orbits, high above Earth and its atmosphere. So, Hubble can see space better than telescopes on Earth can. Hubble is not the kind of telescope that you look through with your eye.

How technology has expanded our knowledge about astronomy?

From simple, small light collecting telescopes to the huge multi-mirror telescopes like the Keck, they have all helped humans see further into space and collect more information about the universe at large. Technology has allowed astronomers to do more than just look through telescopes now.

How do we observe the Sun?

There are two ways to look at the Sun safely: by direct viewing, with a proper filter over the front of the telescope, or by projecting the Sun’s image onto a piece of paper. They protect the eye against both visible and invisible radiations and the telescope itself against heat.

How do you make your own Solar viewer?

Use the pin to poke a small hole in the centre of the foil. Sellotape white paper to the inside of the other end of the box. Stand with the Sun behind you. Hold the box upside down so the pinhole is behind you. Make sure you can’t see the foil. The Sun will shine through the pinhole. An image of the Sun will be projected on the white paper.

Can a small telescope be used to view the Sun?

Small telescopes are especially suited to the solar-projection method. Seen here is a simple projection system made from a cardboard box with a piece of white paper as a projection surface. A surprising amount of detail on the solar surface can be seen. When viewing the Sun via the projection method, follow these precautions for safe viewing:

What’s the best way to look at the Sun?

Here is one way to look at the Sun safely, using a pinhole projector. Long box (if you can’t find a long box, tape two smaller boxes together). The longer the box, the bigger your image will be. Cut a square in the centre of one end of the box, around 5cm x 5cm. Sellotape a piece of foil over the square.

What are the advantages of projecting the Sun?

One advantage of the projection method is that sunspot positions can be marked right on the paper. A circle is drawn in advance, the Sun’s image is fitted to it and focused, and a few touches of the pencil does the rest.
