What to do
Start by finding your booking reference and the exact ticket type. Look at the fare rules if they are still available in the confirmation email or on the airline site. Then decide how urgent the change is. If the flight is more than a week away you usually have more room to manoeuvre. If it’s in the next 48 hours the options get narrower fast.
Contact the airline as soon as you can. You can do it online through the manage booking section, by phone, or by email. Online is often quicker for simple date changes on the same route. Phone works better when the system refuses the change or when you need a different route. Email is useful when you want a written record.
Three options
First option is a free or low-cost change on the same route. Some fares allow one free date change if you request it early enough. Others charge a fixed fee plus any difference in the new fare. Check the original conditions carefully.
Second option is to change the date and accept a higher fare. This happens a lot when the new dates are busier or closer to departure. You pay the change fee and the difference between the old and new ticket price. Sometimes the difference is small, sometimes it hurts.
