Does my battery need a vent?
Sealed batteries do not need to be vented. Never install any type of battery in a completely sealed container. For safety’s sake, these potentially explosive gasses must be allowed to vent to the atmosphere and must never be trapped in a sealed battery box or tightly enclosed space!
Do you need to vent a battery under the hood?
It must be vented because there are gasses given off during charging. Under extreme conditions like a bad voltage regulator on your alternator, the battery can actually boil. All lead acid batteries are vented. The motorcraft most likely has vents under the cell caps, but not a single dedicated vent like your new one.
What is a vented battery?
A vented cell battery uses a pressure release valve to allow the gases produced during its normal operation to vent into the atmosphere to avoid rupture of the cell case. There are many different kinds of vented cell batteries, including: Air Depolarized Zinc with Mercury. Air Depolarized Zinc, Non-Toxic.
What happens if you don’t vent your battery?
You have a major fire hazard or even an explosion in your boot, as while lead acid batteries are being “used” they release toxic and flammable gasses. Also the gasses could/will leak into the cabin .. if that doesn’t kill you, then you’d prolly lose a damn few brain cells.
Why do some car batteries have a vent tube?
These vent ports allow the gas that is produced in the battery to escape. On applications with a single vent tube, the opposing vent opening on the battery cover must be plugged using the vent plug. Instructions for using the vent plug are included on the battery positive post cover.

Why do batteries need to be vented?
If a battery is overcharged it starts ‘boiling’, and will produce lots of hydrogen. If that hydrogen is allowed to reach a 10% buildup the battery may explode. Or, if it leaks out, the tiniest spark can ignite it. RV battery ventilation prevents these nasty scenarios.
Why does my car battery have a vent?
The typical maintenance-free battery is completely sealed except for two small vent ports in the side. These vent ports allow the gas that is produced in the battery to escape.
Why do some car batteries have vent tube?
How much venting do batteries need?
Although it sounds fancy, and rather technical – venting an RV battery is not quite as complex as it sounds. All you really need to do is add a few holes – about 25mm in diameter to the top and bottom of your battery enclosure. It’s a simple enough procedure and it could prevent a disaster.
What is the danger related to a battery that vents into the passenger compartment?
Batteries that sit in the passenger compartment are sealed batteries: they do not vent to the outside air, but instead have a small opening that connects to a special vent tube. If toxic fumes are released from the battery, the tube carries them out of the passenger cabin.
