How does a radiator fan work?

How does a radiator fan work?

Basically, a radiator fan blows cooler air through the radiator to lower the coolant temperature and cool off the heat from the car engine. Obviously, when the engine is running, it produces heat. That heat must be dispersed so that the engine will not experience any form of overheating or become too hot.

How does a mechanical radiator fan work?

A mechanical fan is connected to the engine directly by drive pulleys. This type of radiator fan is controlled by a thermal fan clutch that senses radiator heat. After sensing the heat temperature, the radiator fan turns on when the engine is running at a higher temperature.

Does a radiator fan push or pull?

Electrical fans can either push air through the radiator or pull air through it. A pusher fan sits in front of the radiator. When a vehicle is moving, a pusher fan can obstruct airflow due to its positioning in front of the radiator. A puller fan on the other hand sits right behind the radiator.

How does a hydraulic cooling fan work?

The flow divider valve, the steering system and the hydraulic fan drive system function as if each system receives oil flow from a dedicated pump. The fan motor drives a fan to cool the charge air and engine coolant. The more oil that passes through the motor, the faster the fan speed.

Why is my radiator fan not working?

The most common reasons a radiator fan is not working are luckily due to a blown fuse, bad relay, or a broken wire. It can also be caused by a faulty coolant temp sensor, low coolant level or the fan itself can be damaged.

How does the Fiero cooling fan system work?

The first step is making sure the cooling fan turns on when it should. Here is how the Fiero cooling fan system works. The Enine Control Module (ECM) provides a ground path to energize the fan relay, which turns ON the cooling fan. The ECM will command the fan ON, when coolant temp is above 108°C (226°F).

How many switches does a Fiero a / C have?

There appears that an explaination of the Fiero cooling system electricals is in order; lets look at the engine first. There are four (4) sensor/switches on the Fiero, 4 cyl or 6. On some of the 4 cyl A/C cars, there’s a two speed fan; it has two switches in one shell to activate the fan.

Where are the relay contacts on a Fiero?

The relay contacts actually supply the large current needed by the fan. This relayis located in the LH front corner of the front compartment. To check the fan, short the Dk GRN/WHT wire on the fan switchon the engine to ground with the ignition on. The fanshould activate. This fan switchis notorious for not operating.

How can I tell if my Fiero fan is overheating?

If the Fiero Gauge or Warning Light indicates overheating, but no boil over occurred, the gauge circuit should be checked. If you have a SCAN tool, the accuracy can be checked by comparing the coolant sensor reading using the SCAN tool and comparing its reading with the gauge reading.
