Cause
Late technical issues, crew duty limits or weather that closes operations after a certain hour often push flights into the next day. The airline will usually rebook you on the first morning service, but that still leaves a full night to manage with luggage and no clear place to rest.
Problem
The flight is delayed into the early hours or cancelled for the night and the next available departure is only in the morning. You are tired, the terminal is emptying, and sitting in a chair until sunrise feels like the worst possible use of the remaining hours.

What to do
Confirm the new departure time and ask what overnight care the airline will provide - hotel, meal vouchers or at least a quieter waiting area. At the same time look at overnight trains, early buses or a short hotel stay plus the first morning connection. Decide whether you need to be home at a specific hour or if a slightly later arrival is still acceptable. Keep every receipt and every written update.
Three options
First option is to take the airline’s rebooked morning flight. This is the most straightforward path. You spend the night at a hotel if one is offered or in the terminal, then fly out early. Total extra time is usually six to ten hours of waiting plus the original flight duration. Cost is often limited to the night itself if the airline covers the room, otherwise a basic airport hotel can run 70 to 150 euros or dollars.
Second option is an overnight train if one still departs from the city. Some routes have late evening or night services that arrive near your destination in the early morning. Travel time is typically seven to eleven hours. You sleep on the train and avoid the airport at dawn. Tickets bought the same evening usually cost between 55 and 140 euros or dollars depending on distance and cabin type.
Third option is a long-distance overnight bus or an early morning bus combined with a short local transfer. This is slower and less comfortable, often eight to twelve hours, but seats remain available and the price stays lower, commonly 30 to 90 euros or dollars. It works when trains are full or the rail connection is poor.
Cost
The airline morning rebooking is normally free when the delay is on their side. Hotels and meals may be covered under care rules, but this is not guaranteed every time. Trains, buses and any hotel you book yourself come from your pocket first. Save every ticket and receipt because some of those expenses can be claimed later. Local transport to the station or bus terminal adds a small extra amount.
How to stay efficient
Choose the option that gives you the most actual rest rather than the one that looks fastest on paper. If you take a hotel, pick one that still allows a realistic transfer back to the airport or station in the morning. Set two alarms. Charge every device before you leave the terminal. Message the people expecting you with the new arrival window so they are not waiting unnecessarily. Keep the original delay notice, it helps with any later refund or cost claims.
Summary
An overnight delay does not force you to sit upright until morning. Confirm what the airline will cover, then compare their early flight against overnight trains and buses. Pick the path that protects your energy and the rest of the next day, keep every receipt, and move while options still exist. Most people who run these checks in the evening still arrive home in workable condition instead of completely worn out.
