What do we learn about Mrs Winterbottom in Chapter 20?
Winterbottom is afflicted with a deep sadness and sense of inadequacy. Phoebe has no idea the same thing happened to Sal when she asks Sal to keep her mother’s disappearance a secret. When Sal’s father tells her that people return in Chapter 20, Sal cannot help but believe he is talking about Sugar rather than Mrs.

What was the dreadful event that happened to Sal’s mom regarding her baby sister? Her baby sister died while her mother was given birth. The umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. Sal had fallen and her mother carried her across the field when she was pregnant.
