By selecting the right magneto, you shut off the left magneto. Your run-up check proves that each ignition system operates without help from the other one. The Both position of the mag switch removes the ground from both magnetos, and the engine uses the full dual system.
How do you perform a mag check?
The in-flight mag check is performed at normal cruise power and an aggressively lean mixture (preferably LOP). Run the engine on each individual mag for at least 15 to 20 seconds while watching the engine monitor in normalize mode.
