What is the movement of chest?
Chest expansion on inspiration should be the same or similar on each breath. The chest wall is symmetrical, accessory (neck and shoulder) muscles are not used, diaphragm muscles are functioning, and there is no paradoxical movement – the chest and abdomen move in the same direction on inspiration and expiration.
When you breathe out does your chest get bigger or smaller?
When the diaphragm muscle contracts, its dome shape is flattened and the chest cavity gets bigger. This change in the volume of the chest cavity pulls air into the lungs, and they expand. When the diaphragm relaxes, it moves back into its dome shape. When this happens, the chest cavity gets smaller and you breathe out.
When we breathe in your chest size?
During inhalation, the ribs move outwards due to which the size of chest cavity increases. On the other hand, when we exhale, the size of chest cavity tends to decrease.

Palpation is the tactile examination of the chest from which can be elicited tenderness, asymmetry, diaphragmatic excursion, crepitus, and vocal fremitus. Areas of increased vibration or fremitus correspond to areas of increased tissue density such as those caused by consolidation by pneumonia or malignancy.
Why does your chest expand while breathing?
When you breathe in, your diaphragm contracts downwards towards your belly. That allows your lungs to expand and take in oxygen since there’s more room in the chest cavity. The intercostal muscles, which run in between your ribs, help the chest cavity expand.

How do I make sure my breathing is normal?
Close the mouth and take a slow breath in through the nose, while feeling the abdomen rise and inflate like a balloon. Breathe out slowly through pursed lips, as if blowing bubbles, with each expiratory breath taking about two to three times as long as each inhalation. Repeat these steps for 5–10 minutes.
