Charleston was the home of South Carolina’s first State House. In 1786 the South Carolina Assembly voted to move the state capital to Columbia, a more geographically, centralized location. Construction of the new State House in Columbia was in progress when a fire, on February 5, 1788, destroyed the first State House.
