Why is smoky mouse endangered?
Major threats to the species include predation by introduced carnivores, habitat changes due to altered fire regimes and dieback caused by the Cinnamon Fungus (Phytophthora cinnamomi), and loss, modification and fragmentation of habitat due to road construction and intensive timber harvesting.
How many smoky mouse are left?
There are only about 100 recorded smoky mice, or Pseudomys fumeus, in the wild, dotted in tiny populations in the Grampians, Central Highlands and East Gippsland in Victoria, and around Kosciuszko national park and Nullica state forest in New South Wales.
