Can I insulate over LED ceiling lights?
Insulation can only be installed over LED downlights that are approved to do so.
How much clearance do you need for LED downlights?
A: Manufacturers responses on this question vary but the general rule is to leave sufficient air space which is around 10-40mm from above.
Can loft insulation go over downlights?
The loft lid creates a barrier between the downlight and the thermal insulation. The insulation can then be laid over the loft lid and packed to the sides if necessary. Loft caps or loft lids for downlights can be used with either fire rated or non fire rated downlights.
Are fire hoods required for LED downlights?
If your LED spotlights are fire rated, then the answer is no (this will be indicated on either the packaging or can be checked on the manufacturers website). The purpose of a fire hood is to stop or slow down the passage of fire, through the holes cut in the ceiling that the downlight sits in.
Do LED ceiling lights need insulation?
Answer: While LEDs run much cooler than incandescents, their electronic components and external heat sinks do get quite hot; you would still need to keep the insulation away from your fixtures.
Do LED lights need insulation?
IC (insulated contact) rated recessed lights can be safely used without the risk of overheating, even if they’re covered by insulation. Even though they run cooler than other lightbulbs, LED recessed lights do still need to be IC rated.
Can LED downlights cause fires?
When installed correctly, downlights do not pose a fire risk.
Can LED recessed lights be covered with insulation?
Can I put insulation over downlights?
As you’ve no doubt guessed, non-fire rated LED downlights cannot be covered by insulation directly. This means a cover must be fitted before quilt insulation is installed over the fitting. A fire retardant cover such as the Loft Lid will solve this problem.
Can I cover downlights with insulation?
Certain fire-rated downlights can be covered with insulation, such as the Ansell iCage range when bought with a box insulation protector. Loft caps are made from fire-resistant materials and can be used with any type of downlight, bringing you extra reassurance that your lighting is fire safe.
