Can you walk through Arlington National Cemetery?

You are encouraged to explore the cemetery (you may walk on the grass to find a grave) and attend a public ceremony. However, activities such as running, climbing, bicycling, playing sports or picnicking are not allowed.

Do you have to pay to be buried at Arlington?

Arlington National Cemetery does not charge fees for an interment or inurnment at the cemetery. The only potential costs to the estate of the deceased are for vaults. Effective December 2017, placement of private markers is no longer available for service members and families.

How do you qualify for burial at Arlington?

Due to limited space, only honorably discharged members in certain categories are eligible for burial in Arlington National Cemetery, this includes:

  • Members who died on active duty and their immediate family.
  • Retirees and their immediate family.
  • Recipients of the Purple Heart, or Silver Star and above.

Is the Arlington National Cemetery free?

The site is open to the public 365 days a year with free admission for those who wish to tour the site and pay their respects.

Can you bring dogs to Arlington Cemetery?

With the exception of service animals, pets are not allowed on cemetery grounds. The primary mission of Arlington National Cemetery is to lay to rest those who have served the United States with dignity and honor. The policy does not pertain to approved service animals or military working dogs.

Can you mail cremated remains to Arlington National Cemetery?

Arlington does not accept cremated remains by mail. Urns should be no larger than 9″ x 9″ x 9″ (not including companion urns). If the urn purchased by the family exceeds this size, please inform ANC staff prior to the interment date.

Is there a waiting list to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery?

Requests for chapel services can extend the wait time by two months for a service at Arlington National Cemetery. Only four out of the 27-30 services conducted each week day can have a service at a chapel.

Is it disrespectful to stand on a grave?

Touching monuments or headstones is extremely disrespectful and in some cases, may cause damage. Be sure to walk in between the headstones, and don’t stand on top of a burial place. Be respectful of other mourners. If a funeral is occurring, take care not to get in the way of procession and burial.
