Why is knowing about ions important?
Body fluid contains electrolytes, chemicals which, when they dissolve in water, produce charged ions. These ions enable the flow of electrical signals through the body. Electrolytes play an important role in the body; they regulate the osmotic pressure in cells and help maintain the function of muscle and nerve cells.
Atoms of a particular element contain the same number of protons (positively charged and located in the nucleus together with the neutrons) and electrons (negatively charged, circling the nucleus) thus making it a neutral species. Such charged atoms, called ions, are formed by the addition or removal of electrons.
How do you classify ions?
The nomenclature for binary ionic compounds simply entails naming the ions according to the following rules:
- The positive ion (called a cation) is named first and the negative ion (anion) second.
- A simple cation (obtained from a single atom) takes its name from its parent element.
