Are there any problems with the Evinrude 9.5?
Another common problem with the 9.5 is broken motor mounts. Grab hold of the flywheel (not running, duh) and see if you can push/pull the whole powerhead fore and aft. A bit of movement in the rubber mounts is normal, but gross fore and aft flopping around in there is serious trouble.

I’m looking for an outboard for my MacGregor 25. I’ve been offered an Evinrude 9.5 long shaft 1969 Model 9922S for $419. It seems in good shape.
When did the Johnson 9.5 hp outboard come out?
Johnson used two different model codes prior to 1979. As a Johnson model MQ14 or MQL14 for a 1968, the MQ designating a 9.5hp. Then in 1969, it changed to a 9R69 or a 9R69L which would have indicated a 9.5 hp, R ope starter, 1969 year of manufacture.
What was the year of the first Evinrude?
Pre-1980 Evinrudes have a shorter model number and different numbering system; however, the numbers are in the same location. Model number 85990R translates as 85 horsepower and “9” represents the year of the decade manufactured, in this case 1979.
