Childline is here to help anyone under 19 in the UK with any issue they’re going through. You can talk about anything. Whether it’s something big or small, our trained counsellors are here to support you. Childline is free, confidential and available any time, day or night.

What does Childline do to help South Africa?
The helpline is accessible, 24 hours a day and free from all networks, to children and adults with concerns about children and enables them to contact someone in an emergency situation. It allows children to express their concerns and talk about issues directly affecting them.
What can I talk to Childline about?
You can talk to Childline about anything at all and our counsellors will listen without judging you. It’s important that you feel able to share whatever you want – it can be big, small, good or bad. We are here to listen and to support you, no matter what’s going on.
Who can use Childline?
We’re here for young people aged 18 and under. But even if you’re over 18 and you need support, you don’t have to cope alone.
What happens if a child calls Childline?
Phone calls to Childline aren’t recorded and our number won’t appear on phone bills. But whenever you talk to us we’ll write some notes about what you’ve said. We’ll only ever pass on your phone number or IP address with your permission, or if you’ve told us something we can’t keep confidential.

Childline works with children and young people until they turn 19 years of age. Some young people feel so safe talking to counsellors or using the site that the thought of leaving Childline can make them feel anxious.
How did Childline begin?
It was established after a helpline set up after a BBC television programme on child abuse was inundated with calls. Television presenter Esther Rantzen realised there was an urgent need for an outlet for vulnerable children – and in some cases adults – to talk about what was then a taboo subject, child abuse.

ChildLine is part of a mandated statewide child protective services program designed to accept child abuse referrals and general child well-being concerns, and transmit the information quickly to the appropriate investigating agency. ChildLine is responsible for receiving verbal and electronic referrals 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
