Do badgers live in urban areas?
It is great that badgers can thrive in urban areas. They are vey adaptable creatures, which is just as well as more areas become built-up and urbanised. Surveys have shown that urban badgers have fewer outliers available and will spend less time in them, which suggests that the main sett is particularly important.
How do badgers reproduce?
A male badger may mate with more than one female. The female gives birth in March. She has 1-5 babies in an underground nest lined with grass. The young leave their mother when they are 5-6 months old. Female badgers can mate when they are four months old; male badgers can mate when they are two years old.
Where do badgers mate?
When do badger mate and breed? Mating occurs mainly in early spring and late summer, often close to setts or in sett entrances. Delayed implantation occurs – blastocysts (very early embryos) implant in late December or early January, and the peak birthing period is early February.
Is it safe to have a badger in your garden?
Badgers don’t usually cause huge amounts of damage (and rarely cause permanent scars to your landscaping) but they can be somewhat frightening to encounter and might cause frustration with their habitual digging routines.
Are badgers good for the environment?
I’m an ecologist, zoo keeper and teacher of agriculture and environmental science – I know how important badgers are to our environment. They disperse seeds that help plants grow, and they build tunnels which end up being used by foxes, rabbits, otters and other animals.
What can I do about badgers in my garden?
Badgers can usually be discouraged or prevented from entering gardens with solid, effective fencing and locked gates. A badger-proof wire mesh, buried to a depth of 1m (3ft) may prevent them digging under fences. The bottom 30cm (12in) should be bent outwards to stop the badgers burrowing underneath.
How often does a badger reproduce?
Badgers mate at almost any time of the year, but due to an unusual reproductive technique, known as delayed implantation, they have only one litter a year. Litter size ranges from one to five cubs, with two or three the more common number.
Can you breed badgers?
Mating may occur during any month, suggesting that badgers may be induced ovulators – i.e. it is the act of mating that triggers ovulation, rather than seasonal factors such as day length or temperature.

Are badgers bad for the environment?
More than 50,000 badgers have been culled by farmers in the last two years, and if we keep on going this way it will have a serious impact on our environment. Badgers are an iconic symbol of the British countryside, and killing them will leave a huge hole in the ecosystem and do long-term damage to our environment.
Where does a badger live during the day?
The Badger also possesses a gland under the base of its tail, which gives of a slightly better musky scent that can be used in communication and scent marking each other. Badgers rarely venture out during the day and live in an extensive network of underground tunnels and nests, known as a ‘sett’.
How big are the tunnels that badgers live in?
Badger setts vary from occasionally used “outliers”, which often have single entranced tunnels, to vast, ancient underground complexes with multiple entrances. These larger setts can extend from 20 to 100 metres or more, with some of the largest having more than 50 entrances!
While badgers tend to live in groups, they do not always act cooperatively with their fellow clan members. Badgers are unique in this way as individuals in a clan will forage for food on their own, unlike other social groups of animals who might hunt together and reap the benefit as a group.
What kind of soil does a badger like?
Badgers prefer a well drained soil and often dig their setts under matted tree roots to provide stability to the soil. Nest chambers in the tunnels are lined with dry grass, bracken and straw. Bedding may be taken to the entrance of the sett in order to air in the sun.
