The story and musical was developed over a series of readings and workshops. Schwartz wrote the role of Glinda with Kristin Chenoweth in mind, and she played the role from the readings through to Broadway. Stephanie J. Block played Elphaba in the readings and workshops before Idina Menzel was cast for Broadway.
Was Wicked written before the Wizard of Oz?
Wicked tells the backstory of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and what happened before Dorothy Gale arrived in the land of Oz, although the musical serves as a better prequel to the popular 1939 film than to L. Frank Baum’s original book, and is therefore not considered canon.
Why did WCKD create the maze?
The whole purpose of the Maze and their trials was to study their brain patterns. They were trying to figure out how the brain patterns of an immune differ from the brain patterns of a non-immune. WICKED believed that testing these kids and studying their brain patterns would help them find a cure for the Flare.
