What is candling and why is it used?

Candling is a method used in embryology to study the growth and development of an embryo inside an egg. The method uses a bright light source behind the egg to show details through the shell, and is so called because the original sources of light used were candles.

Eggs are normally candled after 7 to 8 days of incubation. The most critical period of incubation during the development of the embryo is the first week so it is best to be patient and only take a look after the first week.

When to candle Guinea eggs?

Guinea eggs are usually pretty dark, and turkey eggs have all those spots, so if your light isn’t very strong it would be hard to see anything. Just don’t toss any until at least day 14, by then you should know for sure if they are developing. We usually wait for 14 days to candle.

When can I candle chicken eggs?

One of the best days to candle are days 7 through 11, but you may candle anytime from day 3 to day 17. After day 17 it’s best to leave the eggs be, as the chicks get into their hatching position.
