Most of the tropical rainforests of Africa exist in the Congo (formerly Zaire) River Basin, although an unbroken forest once stretched from Senegal on the Atlantic coast to the Rift Valley. West Africa has suffered heavy deforestation from logging and agriculture and only a small portion of the original cover remains.
