Can I use PEX for my boiler lines?

Can I use PEX for my boiler lines?

The Pex material is made to be strong, yet pliable, making it ideal for pipes that need to bend around and throughout a house. Since the boiler needs to heat the water to a temperature of 180 degrees, it is not suitable for use in the kitchen or bathrooms. Flexible Pex tubing attaches easily to a boiler.

What is the temperature rating for PEX pipe?

200 degrees
The maximum heat temperature of the PEX tube is 200 degrees. The maximum heat of the PEX can be up to 180 degrees.

Is PEX good for heat transfer?

Thermal conductivity The thicker walls of PEX-a pipe act as an insulator, offering insulation values of approximately R-0.19. The heat transfer from copper is much greater; PEX-a offers up to 30 percent better insulating value when comparing uninsulated PEX-a with uninsulated copper pipe.

Can you use white PEX for heating?

White PEX pipe can be used for either hot or cold water.

Is PEX safe for radiators?

A: Oxygen barrier type PEX pipe has an external polymer coating called EVOH or “oxygen diffusion barrier” and it’s the type used for all standard closed loop heating applications, including floor heating, baseboard/radiator heating and snow melting.

Can you use SharkBite fittings on boiler lines?

Yes. SharkBite fittings can be used for hydronic heating applications if the temperature does not exceed 200°F.

Can PEX pipe be heated and bent?

Type A pex is the only one that can be unkinked by application of heat from a heat gun. But, it won’t improve the turn radius. Each size and type of pex has a minimum turn radius and you should be able to bend it to that without doing anything special.

Can Blue PEX be used for hot water?

PEX without an oxygen barrier is designed primarily for use in potable water plumbing systems. The color of PEX does not change any of the tubing’s ratings. There would be no problem, for example, using blue PEX for hot water lines or red PEX for cold water lines.

Does PEX lose heat faster than copper?

It is interesting to note the bare PEX pipe actually has more heat loss than the bare copper pipe. The PEX has a heat loss of 31.96 Btuh/ft versus 29.634 Btuh/ft for the copper.

Is PEX heat resistant?

The PEX tube can withstand a maximum heat temperature of 200 degrees Fahrenheit. In a plumbing project, the PEX is able to stand a maximum heat of up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Usually, the highest temperature limitation is listed on the PEX tubing in small prints.

What size pipe do you use for radiators?

15mm
Most modern wet central heating systems use standard 15mm copper pipes, while the pipes that link the boiler, pump and points where the circuits split off will be 22mm or 28mm in diameter.

Can a PEX pipe hold a radiator in place?

Some radiators seem to be only anchored in place by their supply pipes…pex won’t do that, so you’d need to devise some other way to hold them in place. The ID of pex is smaller than the equivalent iron piping, so you may need a larger diameter for best flow (which, you may not need). Veronica F likes this.

Can a PEX pipe be used for hydronic heating?

Yes, PEX pipe is approved for radiant or hydronic heating applications. Since ferrous components are likely to be present in the system, it is important to use oxygen barrier PEX pipe to help prevent ferrous components from rusting.

Do you need solders to install PEX pipe?

Since the pipe and the expansion ring have to be mechanically expanded before the fitting is inserted, the problem of dry-fitting is never an issue, unlike with copper. Furthermore, no torches, glues or solders are necessary, which makes for a cleaner, healthier job site.

What should PEX water temp be for baseboard heater?

Baseboard heater water is usually around 180 degrees. Looks like you can easily find PEX rated for 200 degrees at Home Depot even: http://www.homedepot.com/p/SharkBite-3-4-in-x-100-ft-Oxygen-Barrier-Radiant-Heating-PEX-Pipe-U870O100/202033002 So temperature isn’t an issue. What will matter is how your current system is set up.
