Can you do a CBT without a bike?
Do I need my own bike and clothing? No. All centres will provide you with everything you need. You can use your own bike if you have one, but it must be fully road legal including tax, MoT and insurance (which might be difficult if you don’t yet have a CBT).
Can I ride a 250cc on a CBT?
You can ride up to 125cc with a valid CBT certificate. (or a full motorcycle licence category A) A 250cc motorcycle will required a full motorcycle licence. In this case, you could only use it on the roads with a valid CBT certificate or full motorcycle licence.
Does it matter what bike you do your CBT on?
The CBT is just basic training to make sure you can safely continue learning on the road on your own for 2 years, and it isn’t a full course – so if you are confident you are able to safely progress to a 125cc geared bike then that is fine, even if you pass on an automatic and/or smaller bike.
Can you pass your CBT on an automatic?
Currently if a rider passes the CBT on an automatic they can ride a manual 125cc motorcycle. Most trainers agreed that training on an automatic does not prepare you for riding a manual and therefore it is suggested that those trained on an automatic vehicle be restricted to an automatic vehicle.
Can you fail a CBT?
The CBT is not a test, so you theoretically cannot ‘pass or fail’ your CBT. These are determined by the instructor who will be training you on the day of your CBT test. Although you can’t fail a CBT test, you may be asked to come back for additional training until the instructor feels you are safe to ride on the road.
How much is a full motorbike Licence UK?
It costs £100-£135 and most ATBs provide motorcycles and helmets. On successfully completing the course you’ll get a CBT certificate valid for two years.
Can I drive a 500cc on a CBT?
A Medium Licence allows riders to take their test on a 500cc motorcycle, allowing them to ride any bike not exceeding 35kW. You must complete CBT (which you can do as part of an intensive course), a motorcycle theory test and finally take both parts of the practical test on a 500cc motorcycle.

Is there a theory test for CBT?
No, your CBT just qualifies you as a learner for a two year period and as such you do NOT need to take a theory test, you must however pass one before any full motorcycle test can be taken.
Do you learn gears on a CBT?
If you want to ride a geared bike on your CBT you will be taught gears on the day.
