How does GTN relieve pain?
In angina, GTN works by widening blood vessels (veins and arteries). This increases the blood supply to your heart, which gets more oxygen to your heart muscles and this reduces chest pain.

GTN works in two ways. It relaxes blood vessels in your body (causing them to widen) and this reduces the strain on your heart, making it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body.
How many times a day can you use glyceryl trinitrate spray?
No more than three doses are recommended at any one time. For the prevention of inducible angina (e.g. physical effort, emotional stress, exposure to cold) one or two 400 microgram metered doses sprayed under the tongue within 2-3 minutes of the event starting.

If you miss doses or don’t take the drug on schedule: This drug is not meant to be taken on a schedule. Take it only when you have chest pain. If you take too much: You could have dangerous levels of the drug in your body.
Is GTN spray always effective?
Nearly everyone will need GTN (glyceryl trinitrate) to relieve angina pain as it happens. It is absorbed in the mouth, under the tongue (sublingual) making it effective in 1-2 mins with the effect lasting 20-30 mins. It can be used in tablet or spray form, whichever you prefer.
When should you not use GTN?
Do not use GTN Spray: • If you are allergic to glyceryl trinitrate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6). If you have severe low blood pressure. If you have shock caused by low blood pressure. If you have severe anaemia.

Is angina worse when lying down?
Pain from angina is also, like GERD, relieved by changing bodily position, such as sitting up. The pain can be worse when lying down. If you suspect angina, seek medical help immediately. While the pain can subside by itself, the underlying causes are serious and always need medical treatment.
