How far should a chain go?
The standard pitch of a new chain link should sit at half an inch (12.7mm), pin-to-pin. An inner plus an outer (wide and narrow) link of a chain makes an even inch. Chainrings and cassette cogs are designed with this pitch in mind, such that the chain rides at the base of the cog/ring when new.
How long does a chain have to be to go over your head?
When selecting a chain’s length, consider the person who will be wearing the chain. A chain will look shorter on a tall or large person than it will on a small person. Longer chain (28″ and 30″) can slip over the head without unfastening, which might be helpful to someone who has trouble fastening small clasp.
How do I know if my chain is too long?
Do a simple check on your bike by shifting the chain to the big chainring and the biggest cassette cog; then, push on the end of the derailleur cage (pushing forward) to see how much it will move forward. If it moves just a little, then you’re good. If it moves a lot, then you’ve got too much chain.
How long does a chain have to be?
The chain is a unit of length equal to 66 feet (22 yards). It is subdivided into 100 links or 4 rods. There are 10 chains in a furlong, and 80 chains in one statute mile.
How long should men’s chains be?
For most men’s chains, 50 cm (20”) is the average length. This falls at the collar bone between the top two buttons on a shirt and looks good inside or outside the shirt. If you’re wearing a pendant necklace, opt for 55-63 cm (22-25”) so the pendant finishes in the middle of your chest.
Is 18 inch chain long enough?

Is 24 too long for chain?
24” – hangs near center of sternum. This is the most popular size chain for men and what I typically recommend. It’s long enough to go over necklines (even V-neck) and not too long to get in the way.
Does chain length affect shifting?
Yes, chain length will effect shifting – too short will not get low gear (big sprocket out back), too long and the chain has more chance of dropping off. 😯 Your shifting issues sound like an indexing problem.
How long should a chain be on a bike?
Using a ruler, a new chain should measure exactly 12 inches across 12 links, from middle of pin to middle of pin. The number most commonly agreed on for a worn chain is one percent elongation between links.
How long should a 12 speed chain last?
There are many variables that affect how long a chain will last. It could last several months, or it could last much longer. A typical mountain bike chain will last 750 miles of single track riding. It’s not easy to gauge exactly how long a chain will last, but there are ways to prolong the life of the chain.
How long do motorcycle chains last?
But chains wear out over time and need replacing. So, how often should a motorcycle chain be replaced? In general, a properly maintained motorcycle can last 20,000 to 30,000 miles, sometimes more. But, some last as little as 5,000 to 10,000 miles.
What happens when chain length is too loose?
A lot too loose and the chain is in danger of jumping off the cogs when you ride over a bump in the road. Correct adjustment to give the desired amount of slop is achieved by moving the rear wheel forwards or backwards as appropriate. Effectively changing the chain stay length.
What’s the minimum length of chain for slop?
This is because a minimum length of 54.177 inch has been rounded down to 54 inches (links). In the above screenshot: New Chainstay Length (17.156 inch) is the length required to produce the desired tension (i.e. 0.75 inch of slop).

To understand the right direction of chainsaw chain and bar, it is important to keep it in the proper position. Moreover In the proper position, the motor and engine section will be on your left side and the chain bar will be on the right side. In that position, this will you easier to clarify the proper direction of the chainsaw chain.
What’s the distance between m and D on a chain?
M (not shown due to insufficient space) is the point that is midway between A and B, and also midway between C and D. C is the lowest point that the chain can be pushed down to with a finger, D is the highest point. If the chain is correctly tensioned then the distance from D to C will be about 0.75 inch or about 20mm.
