Allow 30 minutes after base coat color has been applied to apply the clear coat. Apply 4-5 wet (but not dripping) coats waiting 10+ minutes in between coats. Each coat should be dry to the touch (not tacky) before moving on to the next.

You need 2 coats with one being for UV protection and the second for longevity and again, a third so you can sand & buff it if needed. I guess my coats are on the heavy side since I spray until the clear looks like how want the finish job to look.
Should I clear coat over spray paint?
After the item you spray painted is completely dry, depending on the sheen of paint used, you can apply a clear coat over spray paint. If you use high gloss, semi-gloss and you want a shiny finish, you really don’t have to seal it. If using a lower sheen you can seal with a water-based sealer like Minwax Polycrylic.

Clearcoat layers are also thinner than they look. Even though it may feel dry to the touch it may be a little gummy and sanding it can ruin the job.
