On June 16, 1876, Crook and his men moved toward the Rosebud. The next morning while they were camped at the head of Rosebud Creek, shots rang out and his men turned to meet the Indians on the ridges above them. The battle raged for three hours; nine men were killed, 30 seriously wounded.
