Is it easier to skate on hockey or figure skates?
Which are easier to learn on, figure or hockey skates? If you are going to take up figure skating in the future, it is best to start with figure skates. The adjustment to the toe pick will be a lot harder if you start with hockey skates and switch to figure skates later.
Can you use hockey skates for figure skating?
YES! Figure skates must be worn at all Club sessions — hockey skates are not allowed. If you do not own figure skates you need to rent, buy or borrow a pair before getting on the ice. During general skating hours, hockey skates are allowed on the ice.
What is the main difference between hockey skates and figure skates?
The main difference between the two skates is their usage. Figure skates are used by figure skaters who do a lot of gliding, spinning, and jumping on the ice. On the other hand, hockey skates are for a hockey game which requires a lot of quick movements and maneuvering.
Is it hard to switch from figure skates to hockey skates?
Figure skate blades tend to be a little flatter than hockey skate blades. And of course there’s that toe pick. Kids who start out on figure skates, then transition to hockey skates, can find it a little difficult at first, especially if they relied on the toe pick for balance, stopping, and acceleration.
Which skates are better for beginners?
Inline skates tend to offer better ankle support and more speed, but quad skates are better for overall stability. Inlines are generally easier for beginners to learn with, but quad skates are both highly customizable and better for artistic movements like strutting or spinning.
Why do figure skaters skate backwards?
Skating backwards allows the skater to generate more power and speed than forward skating. Since skates have toe picks, skaters are not able to use much of the blade to generate power because they would trip over their toe picks.
Are figure skates sharpened different than hockey skates?
Figure skates are sharpened with very different goals than hockey skates. NEVER have them done by one of those automatic machines you find in some rinks. Figure skates are ground with a “hollow” in the bottom (to give them those “edges” you hear so much about).
Why do hockey skates have a different shape than figure skates?
Toe picks, blades and shape vary greatly between figure and hockey skates. Figure skates are longer in shape than hockey skates of the same size. The skates are designed differently for different balances of weight. Hockey skates are designed to fit the skater as comfortably as possible and are made for maximum speed.
Why do figure skaters and hockey players use different skates What are the differences and similarities?
The skate’s lighter weight allows players to skate fast, stop on a dime, and change direction. The boot protects the player’s feet against stick blades, pucks, and other impacts. Hockey skate blades have more curve—or rocker—at both ends, making the skates more maneuverable and easier to turn.

Why do my ice skates wobble?
Re: Wobbly skate at speed… Its most likely just that you need to get them sharpened, especially if you use that foot to snow plough. I would suggest you get them sharpened then see if the problem persists, but sometimes after you get your skates sharpened they can feel weird anyway.
