What do galaxies look like?
Most galaxies are flat, but there are different shapes — some are spirals, some are elliptical, and some are irregular. What does the Milky Way look like? Our Milky Way galaxy looks a little like a pinwheel. There are several “spiral arms” in our Milky Way: Sagittarius, Cygnus, Perseus, and Orion.
What is special about our galaxy?
The Milky Way contains over 200 billion stars, and enough dust and gas to make billions more. The solar system lies about 30,000 light-years from the galactic center, and about 20 light-years above the plane of the galaxy. Our galaxy is on a collision course. In roughly 4.5 billion years’ time the Milky Way will smash into the rapidly approaching Andromeda Galaxy, and astronomers are still attempting to predict what it will be like when the two galaxies collide.
