What does the thorax include?
The vertebrate thorax contains the chief organs of respiration and circulation—namely, the lungs, some air passages, the heart, and the largest blood vessels (see thoracic cavity). The bony framework of the human thorax consists of the 12 thoracic vertebrae, 12 pairs of ribs, and the sternum (breastbone).
What is inside the pleura?
A pleura is a serous membrane that folds back on itself to form a two-layered membranous pleural sac. The outer layer is called the parietal pleura and attaches to the chest wall. The inner layer is called the visceral pleura and covers the lungs, blood vessels, nerves, and bronchi.
What area is the thorax?
The thorax is the region between the abdomen inferiorly and the root of the neck superiorly. [1][2] It forms from the thoracic wall, its superficial structures (breast, muscles, and skin) and the thoracic cavity.
What is the thorax function?
It provides a base for the muscle attachment of the upper extremities, the head and neck, the vertebral column, and the pelvis. The thorax also provides protection for the heart, lungs, and viscera.
What is the thoracic pleura?
The chest (thoracic or pleural) cavity is a space that is enclosed by the spine, ribs, and sternum (breast bone) and is separated from the abdomen by the diaphragm. The chest cavity contains the heart, the thoracic aorta, lungs and esophagus (swallowing passage) among other important organs.
What is pericardium and pleura?
Explanation: The pleura, pericardium and peritoneum are membranes that encapsulate major organs of the body. The Pleura are membranes of the thoracic cavity. The pericardium is a dense tissue sac that surrounds the heart. This membrane secretes fluid into the pericardial space between the heart and the pericardium.
Where is the thoracic cage?
thorax
The thoracic cage (rib cage) forms the thorax (chest) portion of the body. It consists of the 12 pairs of ribs with their costal cartilages and the sternum (Figure 1). The ribs are anchored posteriorly to the 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1–T12).
What organ is between your breasts?
The thymus is a small organ located just behind the breast bone (sternum) in the front part of the chest.
What are the parts of the thoracic cavity?
The thoracic cavity has three compartments: the mediastinum and two pleural cavities. The mediastinum is home to the heart, trachea, great vessels, and some other structures. The pleural cavities are on either side of the mediastinum and contain the lungs and the pleural linings.
Where is the thorax located in the body?
Introduction The thorax is the region between the abdomen inferiorly and the root of the neck superiorly. It forms from the thoracic wall, its superficial structures (breast, muscles, and skin) and the thoracic cavity.
What was the girdle round the lower part of the thorax?
A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities by William Smith (1891) “Probably the was a girdle round the lower part of the thorax, helping to keep the two yva\\a together, and itself kept in position by the projecting rim at …” 4. Anatomy, Descriptive and Surgical by Henry Gray (1901)
Where are the mediastinum located in the thorax?
Since there are so many of them, the thoracic cavity is divided into several compartments to aid their localization. There is a mediastinum located centrally bordered by two pleural cavities laterally.
Which is the horizontal plane of the thorax?
A horizontal plane (also known as the thoracic plane) through the angle of the sternum (the junction of the manubrium and the body of the sternum) crossing the T4-T5 vertebral junction divides the superior and inferior mediastinum.[2]
