What if tympanostomy tubes fall out?
The tubes should fall out in about 1 year. If your child gets ear infections after the tubes fall out, the tubes may need to be replaced. If the tubes stay in your child’s ear too long, a surgeon may need to take them out. After the tubes come out, they may leave a small scar in the eardrum.
How do they remove tubes from ear canal?
If the tube is within the ear canal, we can use micro instruments to gently remove it during your appointment. However, sometimes the tube remains in the ear drum. If this is the case, a brief procedure may be needed to remove it.
Can you pull tubes out of ears?
Some ear tubes are soft and flexible, and in some patients can be safely removed in an office setting using a microscope and fine instruments to gently slide them out. Other types of tubes are more rigid and would need to be removed under a brief inhalational anesthetic.

Bleeding from the ear in children who have ear tubes is usually a sign of infection draining through the tubes and development of granulation tissue which is benign. The drainage will usually resolve with topical treatment with ear drops.
