What is a snare and how does it work?

A snare is a long piece of wire with a loop at the end and is attached to a stationary object, such as a large tree or log. The loop of wire is suspended from a branch or small tree and the snare catches an animal by the neck as it is walking along the trail. Poachers set snares targeted for specific animals.

How does a simple snare work?

The simple snare works as the name implies — simply. You create a noose, out of twine or fine wire, and attach it firmly to a sturdy stick driven into the ground. Ideally, the animal will walk right through your snare, catching its head in the noose. As it continues on its way, the noose tightens.

Are snares painful?

Until proven otherwise, their use can continue. The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies states that snares “cause an agonizing prolonged death and restraining snares cause animals to suffer excruciating pain when caught by their limb”.

What are snares used for?

A snare is a thin wire noose set to trap animals which some people view as being a pest or threat, usually foxes and rabbits. These animal traps are used extensively on ‘game’ bird shoots. They are intended to catch the animals around the neck like a lasso.

How do fox snares work?

Snares are unique, in that they catch only when the animal is completely unaware of their presence. Foxes are highly ‘neophobic’ – they have a tendency to avoid anything new. A fox which detects a snare will avoid it. Foxes that have ‘spotted’ a snare can still be caught in another snare which has not been detected.
