What is the difference between blastodisc and Blastoderm?
The infertile blastodisc is a small dense white area about two millimetres across (Figure 2). The fertile blastoderm, by contrast, is larger (4 to 5 mm diameter) than the dense white area of the infertile blastodisc and is always uniformly round (Figure 4).
How do you know if a pigeon egg is fertile?

- Fertile eggs will have a blastoderm that looks like a white bullseye or circle.
- Infertile eggs will have a blastodisc that will have an irregular shape and its white colour is very faint and foggy.
- All eggs will have a white spot or blastodisc whether or not it is fertile.
How does the blastodisc of the fertilized egg differ from an unfertilized one?
An unfertilized egg contains only the hen’s genetic material, which means a chick can never hatch from that egg. The hen’s genetic material, termed the blastodisc, can be identified on an egg yolk as a light-colored dot with irregular borders. Every egg contains a blastodisc.
Are eggs dead fetuses?
After the egg is laid the embryo stays in a kind of suspended animation until the hen sits on it to incubate it. So, the eggs that most of us eat do not have embryos. And even the eggs from farm and backyard chicken eggs probably have not developed enough to be at the stage where one would be eating a baby chick.

How do you tell if a pigeon egg is alive or dead?
It should have a smooth, unmarked shell if it is still alive. Shine a bright flashlight through the egg in a dark room, and look closely at the inside. If the egg is alive you will see veins running through it. The process of removing dead or rotten eggs during incubation that uses this method is candling.
