What length spokes do I need?
The measurements and information you need to determine spoke length are:
- The number of spoke holes in the hub and rim.
- The effective rim diameter, called the “ERD”
- Hub flange diameter at the spoke holes, also known as the Spoke Pitch Diameter.
- Left and right hub flange spacing relative to the hub center.

How many spokes does a BMX wheel have?

BMX bikes commonly have 36 or 48 spoke wheels. Lowrider bicycles may have as many as 144 spokes per wheel. Wheels with fewer spokes have an aerodynamic advantage, as the aerodynamic drag from the spokes is reduced.
How do I know what spokes I need?
To find the length of spoke you require you can check your wheel manufacturer’s manual, or alternatively use an online spoke calculator. This will let you enter details of your hub and rim to calculate the length spoke you need.

What spokes do I need BMX?
BMX wheels, for example, will typically use 36 spokes. For MTB trail riding 32 spokes has become the accepted standard, with more lightweight race wheels featuring 28- or 24-hole drilling.

Worth the weight? A common length BMX spoke for 36 Ti spokes with 12mm brass nipples works out to 291.6 grams. The DT double butted spokes with alloy nipples works out to 280.5.

Are 24 spoke wheels strong enough?
24/28 spoke count wheels with good quality rims and the correct spoke tension should work fine in this application as your total weight is well within spec for most wheels. With lower spoke count the quality of the spokes and the spoke tension used will be more critical than in a higher spoke count wheel.
Are all spokes the same size?
You may need as many as three different spoke lengths. One length for the front wheel, one for the rear drive side, and one for the rear non-drive side.
