Where do the phalanges start?
The digits are named in a similar fashion to the metacarpals, moving lateral to medial, and starting at the thumb. With the exception of the thumb, each digit contains a proximal, intermediate, and distal phalange; the thumb lacks an intermediate phalange. The length of the phalanges decreases distally.
What is the first phalange?
The proximal phalanges are those that are closest to the hand or foot. In the hand, the prominent, knobby ends of the phalanges are known as knuckles. The proximal phalanges join with the metacarpals of the hand or metatarsals of the foot at the metacarpophalangeal joint or metatarsophalangeal joint.
Where are the phalanges located?
Phalanges. The 14 bones that are found in the fingers of each hand and also in the toes of each foot.
What is the first phalanx of the foot?
The phalanges (single: phalanx) of the feet are the tubular bones of the toes. The second to fifth toes each contain a proximal, middle and distal phalanx whereas the great toe (hallux) only contains a proximal and distal phalanx.
What is the function of the phalanges?
The phalanges of the fingers help us manipulate our environment while the phalanges of the foot help us balance, walk, and run.
Where are metacarpals located?
hand
In humans the five metacarpals are flat at the back of the hand and bowed on the palmar side; they form a longitudinal arch that accommodates the muscles, tendons, and nerves of the palm. The metacarpals also form a transverse arch that allows the fingertips and thumb to be brought together for manipulation.
Where is the intermediate phalanges located?
A middle phalanx (plural: phalanges) is one of the tubular long bones found in the fingers [1, 2]. It may also be referred to as a medial phalanx or intermediate phalanx. Like the rest of the phalanges, each middle phalanx has a head, body/shaft, and a base.
Where is the ulna bone located?
forearm
ulna, inner of two bones of the forearm when viewed with the palm facing forward. (The other, shorter bone of the forearm is the radius.)
Where is the first proximal phalanx?
The proximal phalanx of the fingers is the proximal, or first bone, in the fingers when counting from the hand to the tip of the finger. There are three phalanges in each finger. The proximal phalanx is the largest of the three bones in each finger; it has joints with the metacarpal and with the middle phalanx.
What toe is the hallux?
Hallux refers to the big toe, while rigidus indicates that the toe is rigid and cannot move.
How is the number of phalanges expressed in animals?
The number of phalanges in animals is often expressed as a “phalangeal formula” that indicates the numbers of phalanges in digits, beginning from the innermost medial or proximal. For example, humans have a 2-3-3-3-3 formula for the hand, meaning that the thumb has two phalanges, whilst the other fingers each have three.
Where are the middle phalanges located in the hand?
Middle Phalanges: Located in the middle, between the proximal phalanges and distal phalanges. The middle phalanx is not present in the human thumb, which only has a proximal and a distal phalanx [7]. Distal Phalanges: The most terminal of all the phalanges, located at the end of the digits in hand [8].
Where does the body appear in the distal phalanx?
In the distal phalanges of the hand the centres for the bodies appear at the distal extremities of the phalanges, instead of at the middle of the bodies, as in the other phalanges. Moreover, of all the bones of the hand, the distal phalanges are the first to ossify.
Where are the apical tufts located in the phalanx?
Distal phalanx. In the hand, the distal phalanges are flat on their palmar surface, small, and with a roughened, elevated surface of horseshoe form on the palmar surface, supporting the finger pulp. The flat, wide expansions found at the tips of the distal phalanges are called apical tufts. They support the fingertip pads and nails.
