Why are hilly areas cooler than plains?
The reason of cold climate in hills than plains is because of the adiabatic nature of Earth’s atmosphere. Thus, the density of air is the highest on the ground (plains) and reduces as you go higher (like up a mountain). Since our bodies sense this heat as temperature, the higher you go, the cooler it is.
Why are hilly regions cold?
As air rises, the pressure decreases. It is this lower pressure at higher altitudes that causes the temperature to be colder on top of a mountain than at sea level.
Why mountains are colder than plains?

During the summer, the sun’s rays hit the Earth at a steep angle. Also, the long daylight hours allow the Earth plenty of time to reach warm temperatures. During the winter, the sun’s rays hit the Earth at a shallow angle. These rays are more spread out, which minimizes the amount of energy that hits any given spot.

The hills are cooler during summer as air density decreses up the hills so does the temperature. Air becomes cooler with altitude because the heat is lost by radiation from the earth and as the air expands, it cools.

The cooler the temperature the less evaporation there is, meaning that there is more moisture in the air. Mountains or hilly areas being cool are no way related to distance from the sun. In fact hilly areas appear closer to the sun that the areas at the sea level.

Because the sun is only a source of radiative heat and the sun is so far away from the earth that the altitude difference between Plains and hills or mountains is negligible when compared to the overall distance. The real reason is that air becomes less dense as you move higher and thus it’s capacity to hold heat reduces.
