1927. The Pier experienced a name change this year! Municipal Pier was officially renamed Navy Pier in 1927 as a tribute to the Navy personnel who were housed at the Pier during World War I.
The Pier played an important role in World War I. It soon played an important role in military preparations, housing soldiers’ barracks, a Red Cross station, and even a detention center for draft dodgers. In 1927, to honor those who had served in World War I, the Pier got a new name: Navy Pier.
